About Wing’s Wildlife Park – Our Story

Nestled in the heart of Gunns Plains in North-West Tasmania, Wing’s Wildlife Park is one of Tasmania’s most unique wildlife attractions—home to over 150 species of native and exotic animals and recognised for having the largest collection of Tasmanian wildlife in Australia.

But the story of Wing’s Wildlife Park didn’t begin as a business plan. It began with a passion.

From Backyard Wildlife Care to Tasmania Wildlife Park

As a child, Colin Wing had an instinctive love for animals. Long before the park existed, he cared for injured and orphaned wildlife in makeshift enclosures in his parents’ backyard. Life eventually led him down a more traditional path—working on the family dairy farm, building a career, and starting a family with his wife Megan in the Gunns Plains region.

Together, Colin and Megan built a life grounded in farming, raising their children, Josh and Gena, while managing the demands of rural Tasmania. But their connection to animals—and the land—never disappeared.

A Simple Idea That Sparked Something Bigger

What started as family holidays along the Leven River soon evolved into something more. As friends and extended family gathered year after year, the idea of opening a small campground emerged. With minimal planning but plenty of determination, Colin and Megan built basic facilities and welcomed visitors.

It worked—and it grew.

Soon after, they introduced a small farm animal display, giving visitors the chance to connect with rural life. What seemed like a simple addition became the foundation for something much larger.

The Beginning of the Wildlife Park

The turning point came with the creation of the Tasmanian Reptile Centre, inspired by a visiting herpetologist. The exhibit quickly became a popular educational attraction, drawing school groups and visitors from across Tasmania.

From that moment on, the direction of the park changed.

Injured and orphaned wildlife began arriving, as locals recognised the site as a safe place for animal care. Colin and Megan never turned animals away. Without a formal plan, their property gradually transformed into a fully functioning wildlife park—one built on compassion, not strategy.

Growing Into One of Tasmania’s Leading Attractions

While continuing to manage farms, work local jobs, and raise a family, Colin and Megan expanded the park step by step. Cabins were built. Powered sites were added. Visitors began staying longer, asking for food, experiences, and closer interactions with animals.

Over time, Wing’s Wildlife Park became a destination.

Today, the park offers:

  • A diverse range of native Tasmanian wildlife and exotic species
  • Immersive animal encounters and educational experiences
  • On-site accommodation and camping facilities
  • Dedicated wildlife keepers focused on animal welfare

A Family Legacy, Four Generations Strong

Nearly 40 years later, Wing’s Wildlife Park remains a proudly family-run business, now supported by four generations of the Wing family. What began as a backyard passion has evolved into one of Tasmania’s most respected wildlife parks.

Despite its growth, the core values have never changed:

  • Compassion for animals
  • Commitment to conservation and education
  • Creating meaningful, up-close wildlife experiences

More Than a Wildlife Park

Visitors to Wing’s Wildlife Park enjoy more than just a day out—they experience a genuine connection with animals. With accessible pathways, informative signage, and knowledgeable keepers, every visit is both engaging and educational.

Guests can also take part in unforgettable animal encounters, offering rare opportunities to feed, touch, and connect with wildlife in a safe and respectful environment.

Wing’s Wildlife Park is more than a wildlife park—it’s an evolving, immersive experience shaped by passion, family, and a lifelong commitment to animals.
